The List of Resolutions

A small group of us wrote down our most ambitious resolutions. Then, we organized them and kept getting more and more. Here are some of our favorites:

  • get Bubble Tea with Barack Obama
  • join Mensa
  • become a Go master
  • get accepted to Yale
  • become a Kabbalah expert
  • get invited to speak at TED
  • eat breakfast with a published author or artist
  • become a full-time writer for the Colbert Report

THE FULL LIST

AMAZING EXPERIENCES (Travel, etc)

  1. take a pilgrimage
  2. take an exotic trip
    1. take a train across Siberia in winter
    2. go to Forks, Wa, or maybe just Washington
    3. go the the Schemerhorn Symphony Center
    4. go to Venice
    5. take a 15-hour one-way trip
    6. go to a state/country I’ve never been to
    7. move out of the country
    8. go to the ocean for a week
    9. do one of these for free
    10. Go to Ireland
    11. Get a job and earn enough money for a ticket to Japan.
    12. Save enough money and buy a house in Chiba prefecture and get a job as a Japanese speaking English language teacher.
  3. enjoy a different culture
  4. Live to see the next millennium
  5. have 52 memorable Tuesdays
  6. Float in a boat to a quiet Kentucky Lake beach.
  7. Camp in the Great Smokey Mountains again.
  8. Make memories for my grandchildren that share memories my grandparents made for me.

WRITING, PUBLISHING & PROMOTING

  1. write and promote a book
  2. write and promote the greatest album of all time
  3. write a blog and promote it to the top 100
  4. get in Paste Magazine
  5. get in Pitchfork

CAMPAIGNS, GROUPS & ORGANIZATIONS TO START

  1. start a coffeeshop and bookstore
  2. start a cohort, a posse
  3. start a tshirt company
  4. start an online magazine

CULTURE, PURPOSE, and MIND

  1. read 100 books this year
  2. spend the day in Powell Bookstore
  3. work toward stuff that matters long-term
  4. become more cultured
  5. finish reading a book series
  6. watch only public television for a week
  7. don’t watch TV for the year
  8. read a book at least every week

ACHIEVE SOMETHING CRAZY

  1. get accepted to Yale
  2. join Mensa
  3. become a full-time writer for the Colbert Report
  4. get invited to speak at TED
  5. dominate the slam poetry meeting
  6. show @ the Biennial in Denver
  7. join the ranks of UFC and work up to heavyweight
  8. make Dave the next great rapper
  9. become a celebrity
  10. retire in a year
  11. Save the world
  12. start working at some fancy store in Green Hills, and don’t be awkward, and enjoy it for at least one month
  13. get all my 3 years’ procrastination list caught up!
  14. Get into college.
  15. Create something that no one else has though of but wishes they had.

DO SOMETHING CRAZY

  1. ride a Segway
  2. eat a Vegemite sandwich
  3. walk in snow-shoes
  4. go hang-gliding
  5. go to the zoo, take pictures of people looking amused by the animals
  6. go to a Civil War reenactment dressed in full costume
  7. wear a Yankee’s hat in downtown Nashville
  8. play in the Redding Brothers band - (”just one chance guys!”)
  9. get a song written about me (but not from a stalker perspective)
  10. play Musical Catchphrase that works!

SKILLS TO GAIN

  1. learn to stand up from lying down - like in the action movies
  2. become a Go master
  3. become a Kabbalah expert
  4. become a card shark, only don’t gamble
  5. learn to play 2 songs on the guitar
  6. learn how to fly (an airplane!)
  7. Become fluent in German, Japanese, Celtic/Gaelic

MEETING PEOPLE

  1. eat breakfast with a published author or artist

RELATIONSHIPS (People, friends, etc)

  1. meet 25 new friends and keep in touch with them
  2. be myself to new people I meet
  3. become good friends with a Greek person
  4. smoke a cigar with Ryan and Isaac
  5. call a random person every day for a month
  6. invite the random person to a game of skip-bo or dominoes
  7. find peace in my home (amidst 8 kids!)
  8. get my friends to admit I’m not a double-heretic
  9. become someone’s hero

FITNESS, HEALTH, PHYSICAL STRENGTH

  1. benchpress 250 pounds
  2. do 100 pushups
  3. be able to run on an exercise machine for 1 hour
  4. being able to talk & run at the same time
  5. be healthier - eat better, exercise, etc
    1. eat only raw foods
    2. be a vegetarian
    3. lose 30 pounds
