Have 52 Memorable Tuesdays

This entry is part 1 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

I want to make every single Tuesday count - to do something remarkable, memorable, or amazing on every single one. And sometimes that may not mean doing something. It may mean paying attention to what is already there.

Memorable Tuesday #1: Doubt?

This entry is part 2 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

Heather

Hello fellow resolutioners! My new year’s resolution for 2009 is to have 52 memorable Tuesdays! I apologize for the tardiness of my first blog, but I didn’t decide on this resolution until late last week. Luckily, Tues the 6th was memorable or I would’ve already been failing at my goal.

Before we get into memorable Tuesday #1, I thought I’d share with you some interesting facts about Tuesday and why I want to have 52 memorable ones! Wanting to know more about Tuesdays I did the obvious and googled “Tuesday”. The first website on the search results was of course my other good friend Wikipedia! Tuesday is defined on this site as, “Tuesday is a day of the week in the Gregorian calendar. According to the international standard ISO 8601, it is the second day of the week. It occurs between Monday and Wednesday”. Well, that was kind of obvious, huh?

Don’t worry though, Wikipedia didn’t let me down! It had several interesting cultural facts about Tuesday. For instance, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Tuesdays are dedicated to John the Baptist. I wonder why he got Tuesdays? Maybe that is the day they believe he was beheaded? I’m not sure, but it leads into the next fact about Tuesday which is that in the Greek world Tuesday is considered an unlucky day (which would’ve been true for John the Baptist if my hypothesis above is correct). They consider it unlucky b/c that was the day the fall of Constantinople occurred. (“Istanbul was Constantinople. Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople. Been a long time gone, Constantinople. Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night.”) Jews, however, consider Tuesday very lucky because in the first chapter of Genesis in the section about Tuesday (or the 3rd day) it says “it was good” twice. Finally in the U.S., Tuesdays are usually election days and days that videos and audio releases occur for home purchase or rental (Coming this Tues Jan 13th, My Bloody Valentine on DVD and Ray Stevens “Laughter is the Best Medicine”!!).

Now on to Memorable Tues #1: Tuesday January 6th, 2009! What made Tuesday, January 6th, a memorable day for me? It will be memorable for me for two reasons. First, it was one of the rainiest days I’ve seen in Nashville! There were flood advisory warnings out and everything and the worst part was that my socks got wet so I had to deal with wet socks all day long! There’s nothing worse than wet socks!! Gross!

The second reason Tuesday January 6th will be memorable to me is that I went and saw the movie “Doubt” with my BFF Ashley (yeah, I just used BFF…what about it?!). SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t want to know anything about the movie Doubt you should probably just stop reading right about…..NOW.

Ashley’s birthday was January 1st and since I slept her birthday away after babysitting until 2 a.m. the night before I decided to treat her to a movie! Her first pick was Benjamin Button until I informed her that it was 3 hours long! Then she hadn’t seen Twilight yet (books are better than the movie!), but the times it was showing at weren’t good. So, third time’s a charm and she chose Doubt.

While waiting for Ashley in the movie theater lobby I started watching a large group of people in their late 20s and early 30s. All the girls had their hair done the same way (the hair back with the poofy top look…I failed to find a picture of what I’m talking about, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about) and all the guys were very metrosexual looking. They were all very well dressed except for one girl. She had on a very oversized grey sweater with matching sweatpants and shiny grey ballet slipper shoes. It struck me as very odd. They of course went and saw “Doubt”, too.

I honestly didn’t have much hope for the movie. I don’t like conflict and I figured the whole movie was going to be conflict…and Catholic conflict at that! Overall, the movie was good, but I hated the ending. It left you doubting…which I’m sure was very funny to the writers of the movie. “Hey! Let’s write a movie called “Doubt” and then leave the viewers doubting! We’re geniuses!” Meryl Streep’s line at the end was really awkward too. She screams, “I have doubts!” and starts to bawl, but I just wanted to laugh. I had a good time with Ashley, though, and after driving home in the rain I was able to finally put dry socks on!

Memorable Tuesday #2: Celiac or Celine Dion?

This entry is part 3 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

January 13, 2009 will be memorable for many people, including my roommate and several friends from church, because it was the day they went to the Celine Dion concert. For me however, it will be the day I found out about whether or not I have celiac disease.

What is celiac disease you ask? Well according to the Celiac Disease Foundation, celiac disease is “is a lifelong, digestive disorder affecting children and adults. When people with CD eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed”. Their website also states that Celiac Disease is not a food allergy - it is an autoimmune disease. That was good to know especially since I thought it was just a food allergy to wheat. I was going to list all of the symptoms of celiac disease, but they’re kind of gross. If you want to know what they are you can go here: http://www.celiac.org/cd-symptoms.php

Now why would I be worried about whether or not I have this autoimmune disease (not food allergy!)? Well for the last couple years I’ve been having this crazy pain in my right upper rib cage. The best diagnosis I have gotten so far is from my BFF (yeah I used again. Don’t hate, hater!) Heather K. who has diagnosed me with an angry weasel stuck in my rib cage. I have been to three primary care physicians, had two x-rays of my rib cage, been to two chiropractors, had one ultrasound, and one nuclear medicine test and I still hurt every day. My current primary care physician referred me to a gastroenterologist who then tested me for the only thing I haven’t been tested for yet which was celiac disease.

Yesterday I had a voicemail from the gastroenterologist’s nurse with no specifics on whether or not I had celiac disease. This freaked me out a little…ok maybe more than a little…and I called her back but was never able to reach her. So this morning after convincing myself that I could live without gluten for the rest of my life (yeah right, who am I kidding? No more pasta?! Eek!) I called the doctor’s office back and finally got ahold of someone who informed me that I was celiac disease free! :) Luckily, I am not the 1 out of 133 people who have celiac disease. So I wonder if I really do have a weasel stuck in my rib cage?

52 Memorable Tuesdays: Becca’s Second Memorable Tuesday

This entry is part 4 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

With much prodding from Micah, here’s my second Tuesday!  My 52 Memorable Tuesdays will vary greatly; I’m trying to seek out greatness on these days, that is, if it doesn’t find me first.

Perhaps for the only Tuesday this year, I did not work today. I took this opportunity and this Tuesday to resuscitate an old love. Four or five years ago I saw the world differently in many ways, and while there are only a few of those ways that I actually miss, sometimes I find myself longing for this old view. I used to see the world in still shots. A series of photographs that passed around me. My favorite thing to do to explore this passion was drive. I’d pick a road and take it until I found the perfect landscape.

Today, with an overcast sky, I followed a road in my little white car, with my camera and Kings of Leon providing the soundtrack to my exploits. I enjoy this experience for two reasons: I like to drive on winding country roads and I like to capture moments.

While following this road, I noticed that the name changed a good four times from names like “Southeast Tater Peeler Road” to “Stumpy Lane.” While driving I saw modern day plantations, rural shanty towns, and even the home of a famous country singer. Practically neighbors, these people lived completely different lives, less than a mile apart.

When I had arrived at the end of the road with four names, I actually would have been turning onto a major road that is quite familiar to me. Instead I took a U-Turn and took the multi-named road back to where I came from, driving a little faster due to the false sense of familiarity that I now had with the road.

After I arrived back to the other main road I came from, I took a venture to an old abandoned school house, that I love to visit. It was where my great-grandmother taught school for the whole community around a century ago.

The building still stands, though in the summer it is covered in vines and the home to many insects, the wood doors have cracked open and rotted through. The faded name still remains though. I would have liked to venture inside, examine what has been left, unfortunately the people that live next door to the school have some very vicious dogs. While I’m not afraid of dogs, I have learned to respect an angry pit bull when it is defending it’s home. So I snapped a picture halfway out of my car, and quickly drove away without stepping into the past.

Nothing like reliving an old love to make for a memorable Tuesday!

Memorable Tuesday # 3: Presidents and Pots

This entry is part 5 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

January 20, 2009 will be a day not easily forgotten by anyone in the United States. It will be one of those days we will all tell our children and grandchildren about. It will be one of those days we remember exactly where we were. Yes, that’s right, it was the day that Aretha Franklin rocked out the most amazing hat I have ever seen!!!

At 9 A.M. I found out that we would all be meeting in the conference room around 11 A.M. to watch Barack Obama become the 44th President of the United States and the first ever African American President of the United States. Around 11:30 I wandered into the conference room to watch the inauguration with my fellow coworkers. Here are my top five memorable moments of the Inauguration:

5. The Supreme Court Justice messing up Obama’s swearing in. You know Obama had been memorizing and reciting that for weeks and when Chief Justice Roberts changed the wording around it totally threw Obama off. Poor guy.

4. President Obama (elect at the time) walking in looking very serious and majestic followed by Vice President Elect Joe Biden waving at everyone and looking like a complete goofball!

3. Sasha Obama not closing her eyes and looking around during the invocation. I thought, “Yes! A fellow ADDer in the White House!”

2. The classical piece “Air and Simple Gifts” arranged by John Williams and played by Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Anthony McGill, and Gabriela Montero. During the performance by BFF, Heather K., texted me and asked, “Can I get the soundtrack to this inauguration?” I’m not sure if she can, but everyone can watch it again on YouTube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GoRIQ9cwG8

And number 1…drumroll please…

1. Aretha Franklin’s blinged out bow hat!! I want one! Maybe I can incorporate it into my going away outfit at my wedding! :)

I, however, did not appreciate people booing President Bush and singing, “Hey hey hey goodbye!” to him. I feel that it was very disrespectful. No matter how much we disagree with the actions a leader has taken we should still be respectful to them.

Ok, I’m getting off my soapbox now to talk about the other part of my memorable Tuesday…..POTS!

Adam, my fiancé, and I attended the Nashville Bridal fair several weeks ago and registered for any and every prize we could! So far we’ve been pretty successful. The first thing we won was a Rachel Ray cooking pot from Kohl’s. Then we got a phone call about how we had won two free vacations. Yeah, we knew there had to be a catch, which there was. We had to come listen to them attempt to sell us the world’s most perfect pots for about an hour, but we didn’t have to buy anything to win our vacations.

So Adam and I sat in a hotel conference room for an hour while someone tried to sell us and several other couples very expensive pots. We thought about buying them because we both like to cook and it would be a good investment, but we ended up walking away with our free vacations and no pots. Well, earlier this week, I received a phone call from an online bridal registry company informing me we could win an all inclusive trip to Jamaica. At times like these I defer to Adam because I’m a huge sucker. I mean, I cried in Africa when the men in the marketplace were trying to get me to buy overpriced items by telling me they hadn’t eaten in days. So what was the catch this time?

I found out a few minutes later when Adam called me and told me someone would be coming to my apartment Tuesday to cook food for us and try to sell us….you got it….POTS! And not just any pots….waterless cooking pots AKA the world’s most perfect pots (basically the same thing they were trying to sell us at the hotel). These pots can save you money, cook most foods in under half an hour (including steak and pot roast), can be used to stack cook (as in you can cook rice in one pot and put another pot with broccoli on TOP of the first and both will be cooked within 15 minutes), and anything else you ever wanted your pots to do. He cooked us dinner and I’m not going to lie…it was the best corn I have ever eaten and he didn’t use any seasonings or butter (which makes them the healthiest pots in the world too).

So yeah…Adam and I gave in and bought us some lifetime warrantied waterless cooking pots. So be warned, you will be invited by me at sometime to come to my house and be fed by a salesperson because there’s a really awesome food chopper I want which I can get as a hostess gift! I hope your Tuesday was as memorable as mine! Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that Adam and I win the Jamaica trip! :)

Tuesday O’ Tradition

This entry is part 6 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

January 20, 2009 - There are few things in our nation that really make me feel a deep sense of pride. As a country we do very few things in common, which is kind of the beauty of the U.S.A. I feel that our country still has a certain grace when everyone stops what they are doing when a funeral procession passes to show respect to those who are mourning. Today was obviously a day of similar traditions, and let me tell you…I am a sucker for tradition.

There is something about a good strong tradition that makes me feel connected to the past, present, and future all at once. The inauguration ceremony was littered with traditions, even down to who stood where and when they could stand on this side or that. This tradition is downright silly, but I still like it. The only thing that puts chill bumps on the back of my neck more than a good tradition is pomp. I love the formalness of the whole ceremony and all the songs.

It all started back in November, not the planning of this event, but my effort to explain the office of Presidency to the eighteen three-year-olds in my class. The week of the election, we covered all the topics: who gets to vote, why we vote, what the President does, etc. In an effort to describe the Presidential race, I told my class that a few men were running for President; to which one of my students ardent and gravely said: “We don’t run in the classroom!” So, on this Tuesday I experienced a different world view than most: a three-year-old’s.

With my class I discussed how Obama would be our new President and what that means, and we even tried to watch it, but no matter how good the rhetoric Obama had, he couldn’t hold their attentions for more than four minutes. (No really…four minutes was all they made it through!) While we were waiting for his speech to begin, a little girl in my class said “Where is Barack Obama? He HAS to talk to us!” This, to me, was beautiful, and a perspective quite overlooked. Barack Obama wasn’t just making a speech or providing sound bites for pundits, but he was talking to us, as a nation: the people who voted for him, those who didn’t, old, young, racist, Christian, atheist…everyone. Really, he was talking to the world, because the majority of the civilized world was listening. This little girl’s simple statement made what Barack Obama said much more personal for me.

So, after school, I made my way home to watch my TiVO’d history, without three-year-olds standing on their heads while Obama talked with the world.

Memorable Tuesday #4: Access and Abs

This entry is part 7 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

January 27, 2009 will be remembered by me as a learning experience.

Lesson #1: QUERIES, REPORTS, AND FORMS:
Most of my Tuesday was filled with learning more than I ever wanted to know about the computer program Microsoft Access. If you have absolutely no idea what program that is you can go here for more info:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/default.aspx

As a research associate, Access is a pretty important part of my job, specifically the data entry portion of my job. The Access training I attended was on both Monday and Tuesday and was taught by a guy who looked like the love child of Anderson Cooper and Billy Bob Thornton. Tuesday’s portion of Access training was spent learning about creating queries, reports, and forms. So before I bore you all to death about Access let’s move on to the more important and more memorable lesson of the day.

Lesson #2: PILATES HURT. PILATES HURT A LOT!!!!
I have never done Pilates or participated in a Pilates class before. Monday night at the YMCA at 7 p.m. I walked into Studio A not sure what to expect. I soon found out that Pilates is much harder than I knew. So I didn’t actually do Pilates on Tuesday, but I felt the Pilates on Tuesday. I felt them A LOT. My abs hurt when I sat down. They hurt when I stood up. They hurt when I slouched. They hurt when I sneezed. They hurt when I laughed. By Tuesday night, Adam had to help pull me up whenever I got up off the couch. I now appreciate my abdominal muscles much more because I didn’t realize how much I used them during the day. After how much pain Pilates caused me you’re probably thinking I won’t go back, but I guess I like getting my butt kicked because I plan on going back next week. We’ll see how bad I hurt next Tuesday!

One month of memorable Tuesdays down and 11 to go! Hope your January Tuesdays have been as memorable as mine!

Memorable Tuesday #5: Savants, Sitcoms, and Slow Cookers

This entry is part 8 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

I have discovered that Memorable Tuesdays can be memorable for very simple reasons and also for very strange reasons…all in the same Tuesday!

THE SLOW-COOKER

Dick ClarkOn Tuesday February 3, 2009 I tried a new recipe. For Christmas my fiancé’s sister and brother-in-law gave me a new slow cooker cookbook called Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook. (You can buy the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Fix-Forget-Cookbook-Dawn-Ranck/dp/1561483397 ). Also for Christmas, my roommate very kindly bought me a new slow cooker. Just in case you’re like me and grew up calling “slow cookers” “crock pots” when I write “slow cooker” I am referring to a “crock pot”. I’m not sure if “slow cooker” is the Southern term for “crock pot” or if they’re completely interchangeable, but I thought I’d take the time to clarify in case someone out there was completely confused on what a “slow cooker” is.

Because I drive from Columbia, TN to Nashville, TN for work every day, using a slow cooker for dinner is wonderful since it takes anywhere from 45 min-2 hours to get to work (this is usually related to how much and what kind of precipitation is coming out of the sky because in Nashville precipitation is magical and evil and makes everyone forget how to drive). So when I woke up on Tuesday morning I quickly threw the following recipe into a slow cooker, plugged it in, and left for work:

Sharon’s Chicken and Rice Casserole
(The Sharon this casserole belongs to is Sharon Anders from Alburtis, PA.)
Makes 2 servings
Crock Pot / Slow Cooker

  • 10 & ¾ oz. can cream of celery soup
  • 2 oz can sliced mushrooms, undrained
  • ½ cup raw long grain rice (I used brown rice.)
  • 2 chicken-breast halves, skinned and boned
  • 1 Tbsp. dry onion soup mix
  1. Combine soup, mushrooms, and rice in greased slow cooker. Mix well.
  2. Layer chicken breasts on top of mixture. Sprinkle with onion soup mix.
  3. Cover. Cook on Low 4-6 hours.

THE SITCOM

The OfficeAfter driving to Nashville, working 8 hours, and returning to Columbia, I met up with my fiancé, Adam, at my house. Adam works nights at a hospital three days a week, so on those days (this Tuesday being one of those days) we at most get 2 hours together. So the first thing we did during these 2 hours was check out the new recipe. Note: When it says cook for only 4-6 hours…only cook it for 4-6 hours…not 8-9 hours. Luckily, it was still edible but the rice around the edges was definitely very crisp (aka burnt) and parts of the chicken breasts were pretty dry. Overall, not a bad recipe…just don’t overcook it like I did! Next we sat down to watch my favorite show in the whole wide world…the Office! Adam had to work on Super Bowl Sunday so he hadn’t seen the post Super Bowl Office episode yet. I had already seen it twice because it was the craziest and funniest thing I’ve seen in long time! I scream laughed during the first five minutes. If you’re also an obsessed and crazed Office fan like me then you know what I’m talking about. If not…please take a couple minutes to watch the opening scene of that episode here:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/55744/the-office-a-lesson-on-fire

THE SAVANTS

Dick Clark

After Adam left for work I began TV surfing and came across one of the most interesting and strangest stories I have ever heard. On the Discovery Channel they were showing a special called “Extraordinary People” on two women, Flo and Kay, who are the world’s only female twin savants. I unfortunately only caught the end of this special so I had to do some research on my own to find out what exactly they were talking about. First of all, what is a savant? According to Wikipedia savant syndrome is defined as, “a rare condition in which persons with developmental disorders (including autism spectrum disorders) have one or more areas of expertise, ability or brilliance that are in contrast with the individual’s overall limitations”. From previous education I remembered that many individuals with autism (or other developmental disorders) can be very talented in one area. One little boy I volunteered to work with when I was in high school had autism and could hum on perfect pitch even though he wouldn’t speak. Flo and Kay’s specialty is remembering facts and dates. Unfortunately, the syndrome also creates obsessions for the twins. Their primary obsession is Dick Clark. They describe him as their personal savior and know everything there is to know about his game show the $100,000 Pyramid (even how many times the buzzer sounds in each episode). The sweetest part of the whole show was when they showed them getting to meet Dick Clark. For a synopsis of the show go here:

http://www.tvthrong.co.uk/extraordinary-people/the-rainman-twins

I also came across a blog about other famous savants: http://www.neatorama.com/2008/09/05/10-most-fascinating-savants-in-the-world/ . I think this syndrome shows not only how God works in mysterious ways but also how everyone matters and has abilities!

Memorable Tuesday #6: Diets and Divas

This entry is part 9 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

audrey hepburn

On Tuesday February 10, 2009, I officially started my “I don’t want to look fat in my wedding dress” diet (AKA Weight Watchers). Adam started the diet with me too, but I don’t think he’s worried about looking fat in a wedding dress.

I have done the Weight Watchers diet before and found it very successful at helping me lose the weight I gained in graduate school (about 15 lbs). Unfortunately, I’ve gained those 15 lbs back and want to lose them again. I know someone out there is probably rolling their eyes at me about how I want to lose JUST 15 lbs, but those 15 lbs really make a difference to how I feel and how my clothes fit. Seeing as I definitely cannot afford a new wardrobe right now it just left the diet option. I’ve also been focusing on working out more. As you all know from a previous blog, I have recently joined the YMCA and have been attending Pilate’s class. I hope that I can reach my weight loss goal with the combination of 22 points worth of food every day and working out at least three times a week. Unfortunately, I also found out on Tuesday that the Girl Scout cookies I had ordered had come in…life is so cruel!

weight-watchersAlong with starting my diet on Memorable Tuesday #7, I also threw myself into a biography about a woman I have always been enthralled with…Audrey Hepburn. Honestly, the only reason I had been intrigued with her before reading the biography was for her amazing fashion sense. Last Saturday, I was walking through the Spring Hill Library looking for something to read in the non-fiction section (I tend to read a lot of books in the fantasy genre and felt a need for a change). I came across the Audrey Hepburn biography Enchantment by Donald Spoto and immediately picked it up.

I am so glad I checked it out! I am only half way through the book, but I have learned so much about her life and the movies/plays she was a part of. I had no idea that she grew up in Holland during the Nazi occupation and almost died from starvation and jaundice. As a child she also helped Holland’s anti-Nazi movement by delivering secret notes and even communicating with a British soldier who was hiding in a nearby forest.

The biography also includes detailed behind the scenes information about all of her major productions. For instance, in the movie Sabrina, Humphrey Bogart (who plays the Larrabee brother Sabrina ends up with at the end of the movie) was a complete jerk to work with. He was nearing the end of his life and career and had become a very cantankerous person. In some ways it almost kills the romance of many of her movies, but I can’t wait to watch all of her movies again to watch for the details her biography includes.

I’m so excited to finish the book and find out about the rest of her life, including the making of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady and about her dedication to humanitarian work with UNICEF. I strongly encourage everyone to read a biography on someone you have admired for a long time!

I’m now going to continue reading Audrey’s biography while I eat my zero point Progresso soup and one point apple for lunch.

Memorable Tuesday #7: Crashing & Connect Four

This entry is part 10 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

kanye-beyonce-thumb

I remember when Micah announced the beginning of our revolution he said that we would all have successes, struggles, and even failures in the attempt to reach our resolutions. Tuesday February 17, 2009, was a struggle for me from the moment I woke up.

The previous night was spent doing Pilates and staying up too late reading a book, so I was beyond exhausted all day long. I struggled all day to think of something I could do to make Tuesday memorable, but honestly all I wanted to do was go home and crash (which is basically what I did after work).

Fortunately, a memorable moment arose in the early afternoon. A coworker challenged me to a game of Connect Four! It’s been a very long time since I’ve played Connect Four, but I gladly accepted the challenge! One game turned into three games. I had forgotten how much strategy is necessary to succeed at Connect Four, and that’s probably why I only won one of the three games.

Even though this Tuesday was a struggle, I look forward to my next Memorable Tuesday! I actually already have a good idea of what I’m going to do to make it memorable, and I’m super excited to tell you all about it!

Memorable Tuesday #8: Oriental Orphans

This entry is part 11 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays
Children in China

Children in China

On Tuesday February 24, 2009, I adopted a Chinese orphan. Ok, I didn’t really adopt a Chinese orphan like when the Bluths adopted Anyong from Korea in Arrested Development, but I am now officially supporting an orphan from China through the Peachtree City church of Christ.

I feel very strongly about mission work in China. According to the CIA’s World Factbook, in 2008 there were 1,330,044,544 people living in China! To put that in perspective, a little over 300 million people live in the United States and about 6.5 billion people live in the whole entire world. That means that a very significant portion of the world’s population lives in one country. China. This country also is ruled by a communist government, which makes it difficult for Chinese citizens to practice Christianity.

The Peachtree City church of Christ has set up a wide variety of mission works in China. One of their largest works is helping care for orphans in China. I believe they currently have five care centers set up throughout China. They also help financially support children who are in foster care. A second work this church has set up is their medical missions work. This works focuses mainly on giving medical care to children with cleft palates and to children who need open heart surgery. They have a yearly medical mission trip that Adam and I are hoping to help out with in the near future. The church also recently had the opportunity because of the Olympics to set up the Beijing church of Christ. For more information on this church’s work in China you can go here: http://www.ptccoc.com/china.html

JCBCCC Building

JCBCCC Building

So what motivated me to help sponsor an orphan in China? Like I mentioned before, I have felt very strongly about mission work in China for awhile now and I found out about the program to sponsor orphans through a friend who was my roommate at the time. She had been helping sponsor an orphan in China for awhile, so I asked her all about it. Not long after, the preacher from the Beijing church of Christ spoke at the church I attend because the church helps financially support the Chinese mission work. Seeing the pictures of all the orphans who needed help and hearing some of their stories pretty much sealed the deal for me and I decided once I could financially help out, I would.

So starting on March 15th I will have the wonderful opportunity to help out a young girl who is in 4th grade. Her father passed way from heart disease and her mother abandoned her to go to Vietnam. I will get updates on how she’s doing and can even build a relationship with her by corresponding with her through letters. I’m super excited about this opportunity and will be praying that it all goes well!

I really encourage everyone reading this to strongly consider helping out this mission work! You can co-sponsor an orphan for as little as $20 a month or fully sponsor an orphan for $35 a month. For more information you can call 678-423-4396 or contact Pat Brown at patbrown5@charter.net (she is the secretary for the China mission work).

The pictures included in this blog are pictures of the newest care center building and the orphans who are living there! Even if this is something you aren’t interested in helping out with, I really encourage you to resolve to do something this year that will help out someone in need!

Memorable Tuesday #9: Tricky Transitions

This entry is part 12 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays
saving electricity

saving electricity

Transitions have always been difficult for me. My sisters even tease me that I hate change so much I didn’t want to be born (our mother was in induced labor with me for 3 days. The doctors finally figured out I was stuck and had to do an emergency C-section.). Tuesday March 3, 2009 will be a memorable Tuesday for me because recent life changes caught up with me.

On February 21st (which is also my birthday) I moved into a new apartment in Nashville. I moved because I was living in Columbia and working in Nashville, which made for an hour or more drive to work. This move was good because it significantly reduced my driving time and moved me closer to good friends from college, but I was also sad I was moving away from a church and friends I love.

This transition caught up with me on Memorable Tuesday #9 in various ways. First, I finally got the cold I have been trying not to get since the move. This is probably related to the stress and lack of sleep related to moving.

Moving

Moving

Second, I got my first electricity bill from Nashville Electric Service. The bill was only for a week of service, so I expected it to not be very expensive at all. To my great surprise, the bill was for almost $150! Needless to say, I was pretty upset about the whole thing. I couldn’t help but think that if it was going to cost that much to live in Nashville I should just move back to Columbia! My fiancé, Adam, and I went into electricity saving mode and ate dinner without lights on and went and bought light bulbs from Lowe’s that use less wattage. Once I got home I replaced every light bulb I could get my hands on with the new less wattage bulbs. Fortunately, the whole electric bill was a mistake. Adam, being the wonderful fiancé and person he is, called NES the next day to ask them about the bill (I usually ask him to take care of these things because he’s much better at being assertive than I am).

They had made a mistake and accidentally sent us the bill of the lady who previously lived in the apartment. So the much less expensive electricity bill should be arriving in the mail later this week!

The third and final way the transition of moving caught up with me on Tuesday is that I had a pity party for myself. This was most definitely related to the fact that I was sick and had stayed up too late the night before reading the seventh Harry Potter book (which I’ve read before so it was silly of me to stay up late reading it). In the past six months I have gotten very used to having a roommate. I’ve been used to someone being there when I want company and someone to talk to. Now that I don’t have that I realize how much I have taken that for granted. So warning to my friends that live near me…I might be randomly showing up at your doorstep like a homeless orphan looking for company!

Like I said, transitions aren’t easy for me, but I have faith that this will all be for the best in the end!

Memorable Tuesday #10: Cooking Cookie Cheesecake with Chrystina

This entry is part 13 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

fb3This is my friend Chrystina. She is an expert cheesecake maker. She has made cheesecakes for family, friends, weddings, and even royalty (ok…not really on the royalty, but they would enjoy them if she did!).

fbThis is me. I am an expert at doing the robot; however, I have never made a cheesecake.

Tuesday March 10, 2009 was memorable because my friend Chrystina, the expert cheesecake maker, came to my apartment and taught me how to make Oreo cheesecake. Chrystina informed me that the Oreo cheesecake was the first cheesecake she ever made and she has never had a complaint about it. Here is the Oreo cheesecake recipe:

What you need:
1 pkg Oreo cookies
¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
4 pkg. (8 oz each) PHILADELHPIA cream cheese, softened (I was told by the cheesecake expert that it does make a difference which cream cheese you use. You must use PHILADELPHIA cream cheese if you want a good cheesecake. MUST.)
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sour cream
4 eggs

Directions:
Heat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Line 13×9 inch pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides. (We used a springform pan and did not put foil in it.) Process 30 cookies in food processor until finely ground (Chrystina did this for me before she came over.) Add butter; mix well. Press onto bottom of pan.

Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add sour cream; mix well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until blended after each. Chop remaining cookies; stir 1-1/2 cups into batter. Pour over crust; top with remaining chopped cookies.

Bake 45 min or until center is almost set. Cool completely. Refrigerate 4 hours. Use foil handles to lift cheesecake from pan before cutting to serve (since we used a springform pan we ran a knife completely around the edge and then opened the pan).

Being the cheesecake expert she is, Chrystina also gave me some general rules one must remember when making cheesecake. They are as follows:

1. After you put the cheesecake in the oven DO NOT open the oven until it is done baking or evil flying monkeys will be set upon you.
2. Bake the cheesecake 5 minutes less than the directions say (i.e. 40 instead of 45 min for above recipe).
3. Let the cheesecake cool 100% before refrigerating or you’ll have the Grand Canyon of cheesecakes.
4. Cover the cheesecake but not too tightly when it’s refrigerated. If you do not cover it it’ll taste like other things in your refrigerator (i.e. almost spoiled milk, pickles, old spaghetti sauce, etc.). If you cover it too tightly you will cause lots of cracks to occur in your cheesecake.

fb2This is the cheesecake I made with assistance from Chrystina. It was very yummy!!

how to have a memorable tuesday, stop time, and invade a homeless guy’s personal space

This entry is part 14 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

mariah-homeless

Time flies.

As you get older, time seems to go by faster and faster. The reason is simple: When you’re young, everything is a fresh new adventure you’re just stepping into. But the older you are, the less there is in the world and in your life that is really new.

As the new slowly fades from your life, you fall into routines, and so time slips by amazing quickly.

The only way to stop this is to add newness to your life, by doing things you would never normally do. How?

If you’re me, this is how:

I was returning a movie to McDonalds when I became caught up in the outdoors. The air was great, and I wanted to experience it. So instead of driving home, I headed towards the lake. But then I changed my mind. And as I turned around I saw a nice little convenience store that looked like it might host a few murderings and hold-ups every week. Normally, I would have just kept going. But today, I was following life where it wanted to take me.

I turned around in someone’s driveway, and headed into the store to pick up a 16oz bottle of Coke (I would normally do 20oz) and some dried plantain chips (I would normally get banana chips). Although this store seemed like it might host its fair share of near-death encounters, something about it was ALIVE. More importantly, something about it was new.

I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes, enjoying the sun, and then impulsively headed towards the library. I was following the road where it would lead.

In the library parking lot, I got out and looked around. I didn’t really want to go inside, but I was here to experience something. Suddenly, a narrow trail leading into the woods caught my eye.

Now, if you’re me, you spent your childhood reading books about imaginative adventures that happen when children take off down hidden and mysterious trails. And you know that if you are too afraid to follow the trail where it will lead, you’ll miss out on an ancient treasure or mystery just waiting to unveil itself. In fact, just seeing a trail is enough to magically obligate you to take it. If you’re not me, you probably find this line of thought weird and disorienting. But since I AM me, I naturally took the trail.

There I was, winding my way through bushes and small evergreens, under branches, imagining myself to be taking the red pill and heading into Alice’s dream. What wonderland or adventure might lie at the end of this trail?

Maybe I would stumble upon a secret civilization, or a million dollars stashed away. Maybe I would uncover an alien landing site, or fall down a hole into an alternate universe.

Instead, I stumbled upon a homeless guy. Or rather, his…uh…house. Everything was well outfitted, from the nice clothesline, to the mattress he was sleeping on. Boxes were stacked everywhere. Perhaps he still hadn’t gotten around to unpacking.

And he was fast asleep on the mattress, wearing sunglasses, and looking quite a bit like Bono.

I stood there a while, walking around, wondering if he would wake up. He was apparently quite at peace with his environment. As…um…”houses” for homeless people go, this guy was living in a mansion.

So I let him sleep, and headed back towards the library, with my memorable day stuck firmly in my pocket.

And that’s how I do it.

Memorable Tuesdays 11-15

This entry is part 15 of 14 in the series 52 Memorable Tuesdays

weird_car_wreckSo I have obviously been slacking off on my Memorable Tuesday blog writing. I haven’t been slacking off on having Memorable Tuesdays though. So here’s a brief rundown of Memorable Tuesdays #11-15.

Memorable Tuesday #11: March 17, 2009 was memorable because of a Bible study I attended with some of my new friends at the Granny White church of Christ. The Bible study was over Psalm 42 and was very enlightening. This Tuesday was also memorable because my fiancé, Adam, finally finished reading all the Harry Potter books! Now I can talk to him freely about the books without ruining any of the plots for him (like how Neville and Professor McGonagall get married)!

jets_pizzaMemorable Tuesday #12: March 24, 2009 was memorable because I had a last minute change of plans. I was going to attend another Tuesday Bible study, but I got sick and stayed at home instead. My friend Ashley and her dog Tootie Pants came to visit my sickly self. We watched the Twilight movie because Ashley hadn’t seen it yet. We both agreed that the book was better. Adam, who was forced to watch the movie for the second time, decided he had seen the movie two times too many and that they used too much “spinny cam” in the movie. Adam did however discover a very yummy pizza place called Jet’s Pizza! When he went to pick up the pizza he sent me a text message that claimed the pizza weighed at least 15 pounds! It’s our new favorite pizza place!

Memorable Tuesday #13: March 31, 2009 was memorable because I got to celebrate the previously mentioned Chrystina’s birthday at the Cheesecake Factory (she’s a cheesecake queen!). This Tuesday was also memorable because I got to unfortunately file my first ever insurance claim for a car wreck. The previous day I caused a fender bender after dropping a Taylor Swift CD and briefly looking down to see where it had gone. Everyone was ok and I have good insurance coverage, so it all turned out ok in the end!

Memorable Tuesday #14: April 7, 2009 was a memorable Tuesday because I met new people and ate at a new restaurant (well, a new restaurant to me). I accompanied my friends Ashley and Kylie to a dinner with a couple other girls at Davinci’s Pizza. It was nice meeting new people, and the food was good. Jet’s Pizza is still my new favorite pizza place, though.

Memorable Tuesday #15: April 14, 2009 was a memorable Tuesday because my car hates me or cars in general hate me. While driving down I-65 to an appointment for work my check engine light came on and my car began to jerk (or as a friend suggested it started to “dry heave”). Luckily, I knew what the problem was since Adam and I had the same experience only a couple months ago. So, I pulled the car over and ended up right under the Demonbreun bridge. I attempted to call Adam, but he was impossible to wake up since his phone was on silent. I then called Giana, my friend/co-worker, who picked me up and took me to where Adam was. After waking Adam up and explaining to him the predicament he helped me take care of the problem. There’s obviously a leak in the car’s transmission since the exact same thing happened to me only months ago and it was because the car was low on transmission fluid. Of course, by the time we got back to my car its battery was dead because I had left the lights on (that’s such a me thing to do!). We gave my car more transmission fluid and Adam and his dad are going to try and fix the car this weekend. It’s just one more car issue to add to the many I have had in my life. Maybe my resolution for next year should be to go to car mechanic school.
